Fall-Themed Behavior Management Ideas and Read-Alouds

5 Fall Themed Behavior Management Ideas and Read-Alouds for a Positive Classroom

Fall is the perfect time to work on behavior management and introduce bully prevention and kindness lessons in kindergarten and first grade. The season naturally lends itself to themes of growth, change, and community, making it a meaningful backdrop for helping students learn about empathy, inclusion, and respect.

By pairing fall-themed picture books with interactive, hands-on activities, teachers can make social-emotional learning memorable and fun while reinforcing positive behavior management.

Fall-Themed Read-Alouds for Bully Prevention

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes

This timeless story teaches that our words have power. Students connect with Chrysanthemum, a mouse who loves her name until classmates tease her about it. Discuss how unkind words can hurt feelings and how kindness helps everyone feel valued.

Activity Pairing: Wrinkled Heart Craft

Give each student a paper heart. When unkind words are mentioned, have them crumple the heart. When kind actions appear, smooth it out. Talk about how wrinkles remain showing that words leave lasting marks.

The Recess Queen by Alexis O’Neill

An energetic, rhyming story about playground behavior and standing up for others. Students learn that even the “meanest” kids can change when treated with kindness and inclusion.

Activity Pairing: Role-Play with Puppets or Dolls

Use fall-themed puppets (a squirrel, scarecrow, or pumpkin character) to act out bullying scenarios. Ask students how each character feels and brainstorm kind solutions together.

Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano

A fall favorite that celebrates uniqueness and inclusion. Spookley learns to embrace what makes him different and helps others see the value in diversity.

Activity Pairing: Pumpkin Patch Kindness Chart

Every time a student shows kindness or helps a friend, add a paper pumpkin to the class “kindness patch.” When it’s full, celebrate with a fall treat or extra storytime.

Engaging Fall-Themed Kindness and Bully Prevention Behavior Management Activities

1) Caught Being Kind Leaf Jar

Hand out paper leaves when students are caught being kind or standing up for others. Collect them in a jar, and read a few during circle time each week to celebrate kindness in action.

2) Bully Prevention Foldable Craft

Create a simple leaf or pumpkin foldable where students write or draw ways to show kindness, stand up for friends, or include others. Combine writing, art, and social-emotional learning in one meaningful fall activity.

Behavior Management Steps for Teachers

  1. Choose a Book: Select one of the falls read-alouds and preview it before class.
  2. Plan the Discussion: Ask students to listen for examples of kind and unkind actions.
  3. Add Art: Prepare craft supplies (hearts, pumpkins, leaves) for reflection activities.
  4. Celebrate Kindness: Use charts, jars, or bulletin boards to showcase kind deeds.
  5. Practice Scenarios: Role-play solutions with puppets or dolls to build empathy and confidence.

Different Approaches for Behavior Management

Ongoing Integration: Some educators weave kindness discussions into daily routines (morning meetings or storytime).

Thematic Focus: Others dedicate a “Kindness Week” or “Fall Friendship Week” in October to focus on anti-bullying lessons using seasonal books and crafts.

Either approach helps students see, feel, and practice kindness in real and lasting ways.

Why These Lessons Matter

Teaching kindness and empathy early lays the foundation for a respectful, inclusive classroom. When students recognize how their actions affect others and celebrate differences instead of teasing them, they build stronger friendships and a safer learning environment.
