As Thanksgiving approaches, give your young writers the opportunity to use their imaginations to bring a little humor and creativity to the classroom with this exciting fall writing prompt: “The Great Turkey Escape!”
The Prompt
Students are asked to imagine that they are a turkey who just found out about Thanksgiving… and they need to make a quick escape!
They can choose to tell their story in first person (as the turkey) or third person (as the narrator). The only rule: make it funny, detailed, and full of creative ideas!
Prewriting Brainstorm
Before writing, guide students to brainstorm:
- Why does the turkey need to escape?
- Where could it go? (The beach? Outer space? The zoo?)
- Who helps the turkey along the way? (A farmer’s dog? A friendly squirrel?)
- What clever disguise could help the turkey hide?
Encourage students to use graphic organizers to plan their setting, characters, and problem/solution. This step helps them organize ideas before jumping into their stories.
Writing and Illustrating
Once ideas are flowing, students begin drafting their stories.
Some may write letters begging the farmer for mercy, while others create wild adventures featuring turkeys hiding in pumpkin patches, flying to Mexico, or dressing up in clever disguises!
After revising and editing, students can illustrate their final pieces. Display their finished stories on a “Turkey Escape Wall” in your classroom or hallway for everyone to enjoy.
